Tralee Boxing Tournament A Huge Success

Tralee Boxing Tournament A Huge Success

Tralee Boxing Club held a top class boxing tournament at the Abbey Gate Hotel on Saturday October 27th. There were 14 contests with boxers from all over Munster taking part.
The first of the local boxers was Mike McCarthy versus TJ Broderick from Sliabh Luachra Boxing Club of Castleisland in Boy 1 27kg contest. This was a cracking contest which saw both boys give absolutely everything they had on the night. It was closely fought throughout the three rounds but Mike McCarthy won on a split decision.

Patrick McCarthy, twin brother of Mike, was in the third contest of the night versus Daniel Kennelly from Ballyduff Boxing Club. This was another very good fight. Kennelley won on the night getting the judge’s decision.
The fourth contest of the night was Boy 4 33kg where young Listowel boxer from Trojan Boxing Club Stephen McCarthy won a good fight against Tony O’Reilly from Spartan Boxing Club of Cork. The next local boxer on show was Boy 3 46kg which saw Anthony Burke of Tralee Boxing Club in his first contest versus Liam Murphy of Sliabh Luachra Boxing Club, Burke was a little stronger for his opponent on the night and had a good win.
The next of the Tralee boxers was in Bout 8 Boy 2 44kg which saw Robin McCarthy versus Derek Murray of Ballincollig Boxing Club. This was the bout of the night which saw Robin boxing at his best against the strong Cork scrapper, Murray kept coming forward forcing the fight but the better sharper boxing was being done by young McCarthy. He was boxing behind a beautiful southpaw jab, he piled up the points and won the bout on a split decision.
The tenth contest of the night saw the only girl bout of the night at 50kg where Marie McCarthy of Tralee Boxing Club boxed against Jodie O’Gorman of Kilmalllock Boxing Club. This was another fight that could have got voted the fight of the night.
Both girls were on top at different stages of the fight with strong punches been thrown by both girls. Marie seemed to land with stronger punches especially in the first round where O’Gorman took a standing count. The fight could have gone either way but McCarthy got the judge’s decision.
The last of the Tralee boxers was Youth 1 60kg contest which saw Raymond Dowling of Trojan Boxing Club in a points decision over Martin Burke of Tralee Boxing Club.
A couple of other big fights on the night saw Jason Travers of Corpus Christi, Limerick, stopping Brian Hennessy of Ballincollig Boxing Club in the 75kg division.
The last bout of the night was at Youth 2 63kg which saw Maurice Falvey of Trojan Boxing Club versus Stephen Wallace of Ballincollig Boxing Club.
This was another very good contest which was keenly fought throughout. Wallace chased Falvey around the ring for three rounds, Falvey boxed very well behind the jab trying to keep Wallace at bay but Wallace’s sheer aggression won him the fight on the night.
The show was a great success on the night with keenly fought contests.
Robin McCarthy of Tralee Boxing Club picked up the Thomas Kelliher Memorial Shield for best boxer of the night. Tralee Boxing Club would like to thank Tralee Town Council and all those who attended for supporting the tournament.
